You’ve probably heard of liposuction and know at least one person who’s had it done (and hopefully loves the results!)

Liposuction remains to be one of the most popular cosmetic procedures due to the range of areas it can treat as well as its fast and permanent results (pending the patient’s ability to maintain a stable weight, of course).

This article will cover the basics of traditional tumescent liposuction: what it is exactly, how it works, and how to know if you’re a good candidate.

If you’re curious about liposuction and if it’s right for you, keep reading!

What Is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a surgical body contouring procedure that uses a thin tube, called a cannula, attached to a vacuum to suck out excess fat from target areas. This procedure can be done with either local or general anesthesia, depending on the patient’s preference and the provider’s recommendation.

Since liposuction is an invasive procedure, it should only be done by a board-certified surgeon with qualified training and experience.

How Does It Work?

The liposuction procedure can be broken down into three basic steps:

  • You’ll be given anesthesia, whether local or general.
  • Your surgeon will create small incisions in the target area and inject a mixture of saline, lidocaine, and epinephrine into the tissue. This causes the fat to firm up, making it easier to remove.
  • Your surgeon will then insert the cannula into the incision and pass it back and forth under the skin to break up the fat before it is suctioned out.

Basically, your surgeon will remove unwanted fat deposits to contour the target area. This can include areas like the hips, outer thighs, upper arms, stomach, and waist (just to name a few!).

Many patients choose to combine liposuction surgeries with other cosmetic procedures to enhance the results. Some examples of these additional procedures include a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), and fat transfer (to the face, butt, or breasts) to add volume and restore natural fullness.

Are You A Candidate?

If you’re looking into body contouring procedures like liposuction, it’s important to know if you are a good candidate.
Liposuction surgeries are recommended for those who:

  • Are generally healthy and are non-smokers
  • A BMI (Body Mass Index) of 30 or below
  • Have good skin tone and elasticity
  • Are 18 or older

If liposuction isn’t the right procedure for you, there are many other alternative body contouring procedures that may be a better fit. Talk with your doctor to decide which treatment will give you the best results.
