A breast lift is one of the most common procedures cosmetic surgeons perform, either as a standalone treatment or in conjunction with breast augmentation.
Breasts generally sag from a loss of skin elasticity that can occur due to changes in weight, age, pregnancy, and breastfeeding. Although breast sagging is completely normal, cosmetic surgery in the form of a breast lift offers dramatic results.
In today’s article, we will discuss what you can expect from your breast lift procedure, including how to best prepare both beforehand and during the recovery period.

The Procedure
A breast lift procedure involves removing and tightening excess breast skin to raise the breasts to a higher position.
There are four general types of lifts:
- Periareolar/Donut/Benelli – the least invasive option, this lift involves making a full incision around the outside edge of the areola
- Lollipop/Vertical – chosen for minimal scarring, this lift involves making an incision around the areola, as well as vertically down to the crease below the breast
- Anchor lift – ideal for those with major sagging, this lift involves making an incision around the areola, as well as vertically down to the base of the breast and along the crease
- Crescent Lift – typically used in cases of nipple repositioning, this lift involves making a crescent-moon shaped incision around part of the areola.
Some factors in choosing which lift depend on the amount of excess skin along with the position of the areola in relation to the breast. However, the final choice will ultimately be decided on between you and your surgeon.
Tips To Follow
While your surgeon will recommend and provide you with a full list of preoperative and postoperative instructions, here are 10 general tips to follow to best prepare.
Pre-Op
- Avoid medications that may increase bleeding (Advil, Motrin, blood thinners). Discontinue any regular medication use under the guidance of your general physician.
- Avoid alcohol, nicotine, and caffeine which are known to delay healing.
- Arrange for help during recovery.
- Stock up on supplies you’ll need during recovery: gentle soap, laxative/stool softeners (for narcotics), comfortable clothing, and healthy foods low in sodium.
- Opt for loose-fitting clothing on surgery day.
Post-Op
- Take all medications as prescribed.
- Wear your surgical bra for the required period of time.
- Change bandages and clean incisions as per your aftercare instructions.
- Avoid sleeping on your stomach until otherwise advised.
- NO lifting anything over 10 pounds. This may mean taking some time off work.
